Picturing Family: Visions of West Africa / Manlius, NY

We had a great turnout for out Syracuse, NY-area photo show  at the Manlius Public Library, in Manlius NY on April 16, 2015.

The photo show featured the work of teen girls from The Gambia, who run photo businesses so they can afford to stay in school and achieve financial independence. The girls are part of an after-school enrichment program run by Gambian-led Starfish International.

Guest speakers included:

  • Starfish International co-founder who shared information about the girls’ enrichment program, which offers small business training, academic enrichment classes, and life skills training
  • A Starfish student shared her experiences of living in The Gambia
  • Humanity Now’s president, who teaches the photo entrepreneurship program, talked about the work of the talented photographers

Many thanks to the visitors who purchased Gambian handiwork, including hand-dyed batik fabrics, tablecloths, and aprons, as well as colorful handmade purses. Proceeds support the program.
