Picturing Family: Visions of West Africa / New Haven Photo Show

More than 50 people braved traffic on a rainy Friday night, Oct. 2 2015 to celebrate the work of the accomplished teen girl photographers from Starfish International. The show was hosted in a wonderfully funky location — a warehouse whose owner teaches bicycle repair skills to veterans, who in turn donate many of the repaired bikes to the community.

We set up a huge screen and showed videos of the photographers at work in their studio in West Africa, and hung 35 images around the perimeter of the room.

The work sparked some great conversations among the attendees, raised funds, and got some good suggestions for help with the next stages of the project: 1) venues in other cities for the show 2) ideas for funding to bring the Gambian photographers here to present at the shows 3) ideas on the next community to bring this proven entrepreneurial program.
